Just like the GPS requires your address along with the postal code to give you the right directions, similarly, a website needs a domain name to direct you to their website. A domain name consists of two main elements. For example, the domain name Pinterest.com consists of the website’s name (Pinterest) and the domain name extension(.com). Whenever you purchase a domain name, you’ll be able to specify which server it points to.
While .com is the most commonly used domain name extension, there are still a plethora of other domain name types available like .org and .net.
The most common type of domain names include:
TLD- Top Level Domains
This type of domain includes .com, .org, .net, .edu, and many others that stay at the top level of the internet’s domain name system.
ccTLD- Country Code Top Level Domains
These domains are based on international country codes like .in for India and .us for the United States. These are used by organizations that are building a site to target a specific region and audience.
gTLD- Generic Top Level Domain
Generic top-level domains are intended for a specific use-case, such as .org for non-profit organizations, .mil for military, .edu for educational institutions, .gov for government use and the list goes on.
How to register a Domain Name?
This is an easy step as there are many domain name providers such as GoDaddy or Hostinger that you can use to check the availability of your desired domain name. If your domain name is not available, it will provide you with plenty of suggestions. From here you can simply complete the checkout process and voila the domain is yours.
